چکیده

It has long been recognized that heredity plays a part in the aetiology of glaucoma. Fran §ois and Heintz-de Bree (I966) postulated a dominant heredity in open-angle glaucoma. They noted a 98 per cent. penetrance for a dominant gene in some families, but admitted that in other families the penetrance for a dominant gene was very low. Armaly (i 967a), on the other hand, suggested a polygenic inheritance in open-angle glaucoma. A similar controversy exists in diabetes mellitus, where Vallance-Owen (i967) suggests dominance, and Falconer (i965) a multifactorial aetiology. The pattern of angle-closure glaucoma among affected families also shows a variable prevalence. There have been a few reports of a high prevalence with transmission through two or more generations suggesting an autosomal dominant pattern, e. and Lowe (i964). Autosomal recessive inheritance has been reported by Waardenburg (I 949) and Biro (I95i). However, in many families, only one affected member is found. If a dominant heredity is to be postulated in angle-closure as in open-angle glaucoma, a very variable and generally low penetrance of the gene must be assumed to explain the very variable prevalence of the condition in different families. Lowe (1970b) suggested a polygenic aetiology in angle-closure glaucoma. Angle-closure glaucoma occurs most frequently, but not exclusively, in eyes which are ocular dimensions found in hypermetropia which play such an important part in the aetiology of angle-closure glaucoma. Hence hypermetropia is associated with a shallow anterior chamber

Ocular dimensions and the heredity of open-angle glaucoma.

It has long been recognized that heredity plays a part in the aetiology of glaucoma. In open-angle glaucoma an autosomal recessive inheritance has been suggested (Waardenburg, 1949), but in the majority of families reported in which a high prevalence has been found, an autosomal dominant transmission seems apparent (Miller and Paterson, I962; Fransois, Heintz-de Bree, and Tripathi, I966; Franco...

Gonioscopic Features in Patients with Acute and Chronic Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Background: A number of ocular biometric parameters, iris hiotologic and anatomic characters have been suggested as inciting factors for converting patients with narrow angle to angle-closure glaucoma. This study was conducted to determine if there was any goniscopic difference between patients with acute angle-closure glaucoma (AACG) and chronic angle-closure glaucoma (CACG). Methods: ...

The Biometric Values of Affected and Fellow Eyes in Patients with Acute Attack of Primary Angle Closure

Background: It has been estimated that 67 million people worldwide are affected with a primary glaucoma and that one-third have primary angle closure glaucoma. We aimed to determine the biometric differences between the eyes of patients with acute attack of primary angle closure and their non-involved fellow eyes. Methods: Twenty eight patients with acute attack of primary angle closure were re...

An Eye on Travel: An Overview of Travel-Related Ocular Complications

Travellers are at risk of a diverse range of environmental and infectious conditions, some of which may affect the eyes and lead to blindness in severe cases. Travel-related ocular infections include onchocerciasis, leishmaniasis, cysticercosis, trachoma, dengue, loiasis, and leptospirosis. The travel medicine adviser should also recognise other hazards encountered during travel which may adver...

Angle-closure glaucoma: the role of the lens in the pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment.

Primary angle-closure glaucoma is a major cause of blindness worldwide. It is a disease of ocular anatomy that is related to pupillary-block and angle-crowding mechanisms of filtration angle closure. Eyes at increased risk for primary angle-closure are small with decreased axial length, anterior chamber depth, and filtration angle width, associated with a proportionately large lens. Angle-closu...
